The Priè grape variety is the oldest in the Aosta Valley and is mentioned as early as 1691 in a document. The name is thought to derive from the French "prier," to pray, referring to the fact that the wine was used by priests during Sunday mass. Genetic analysis has shown that Priè is the parent of several Valdostan grapes, including Roussin de Morgex, Primetta and Mayolet. Priè is one of the few grape varieties that can survive the extreme climatic conditions of the upper Aosta Valley.
