The Frappato grape variety is native to southeastern Sicily, where it has been documented since the 17th century. It is grown mainly in the province of Ragusa, especially in the countryside around the city of Vittoria. Characterized by a medium-sized pyramidal cluster with compact round oval berries, it grows mainly on dry soils and is not very vigorous nor particularly fertile. Frappato is one of Sicily's oldest grapes but has no ties to the island's atre varieties. According to DNA studies it has a kinship with Sangiovese and a brotherhood with Gaglioppo di Calabria.
