Pallagrello Nero was first described in 1904. It is characterized by a compact, cylindrical, small cluster and is fairly resistant to drought but is very susceptible to disease, especially botrytis. It ripens relatively late, in early October.

The Casavecchia vine is among the oldest in Italy, growing only in the countryside north of Caserta; it has been at risk of extinction but cultivation is increasing despite the fact that it is not very productive or vigorous. The name comes from the discovery of this vine, a farmer in the late 19th century found a hundred-year-old vine shoot outside the ruins of an ancient Roman house near Pontelatone in the province of Caserta. This vine was cultivated and the wine produced was only for local use until the early 2000s when it became of national interest. The vine having a very limited distribution and growing in isolation, it most likely kept its genetic makeup unaltered and uncontaminated.

It is often confused with "Coda di Volpe Bianca," but as early as 1876 it was shown that the two are distinct varieties. The cluster is small, cylindrical in shape with small round berries, with good resistance to botrytis.
