The Lagrein grape variety probably takes its name from the Lagarina Valley in Trentino. Its origins are uncertain, but from genetic studies it has been determined that it is a native variety of South Tyrol, and it is currently the area where there is the largest cultivation, especially around Bolzano. Lagrein is highly prized in this area and as early as 1097 the local government decided to set dates for the annual harvest, at which time the monks of Gries Abbey were the main growers and producers of wine.
