Sangiovese is the most abundant and most important red grape variety in Italy, and it is also one of the ten most cultivated grape varieties in the world. Sangiovese is first mentioned in a 1590 treatise on grape cultivation as Sangiogheto, and was described as a grape with the ability to produce excellent wines. The origins of the name are not very clear; it is thought that Sangiovese comes from the Latin "sanguis Jovis," meaning "blood of Jupiter." Another theory links Sangiovese to the dialect term "sangiovanna" referring to the early budding of this grape. Sangiovese has ancient origins, presumably native to Tuscany, where the Etruscans already cultivated it, but according to some experts it may have origins in southern Italy, being related to varieties very common in those areas. It currently grows throughout Italy, except in the northernmost regions where the climate is colder. Sangiovese grows best in warm areas on soils that are not too fertile and well drained. The Morellino di Scansino appellation was recognized as DOC in 1978 and then DOCG in 2006. It is developed in the hilly area southeast of the province of Grosseto, includes the hilly and pre-hilly areas that slope from the north and east into the Albinia plain and westward toward the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Grosseto plain. The hilly terrain has an average altitude of 250 meters, and the climate is mainly arid and hot, with rainfall occurring mainly in autumn and winter. Vines in the Scansano area have been cultivated since Etruscan times, and during the Middle Ages some scholars extolled the quality of the land and climate for the cultivation of vines, which increased as the centuries passed.
