Aleatico is one of the oldest grape varieties in Italy, already known in Roman times, and according to some experts was brought to Italy by the Greeks. The name is thought to derive from "lugliaticum," July in Latin, referring to the month when Aleatico begins to ripen the clusters change color. It is a vigorous variety that withstands drought very well, growing best in soil that is not too fertile, dry and well ventilated, often growing in hot, dry climates. According to DNA studies, Aleatico is related to Moscato Bianco and is genetically very similar to Morro d'Alba, Sangiovese and Gaglioppo. It grows in several Italian regions but is mainly found in Tuscany, Apulia, Latium and Marche. Aleatico is also found on the island of Elba, where it has been grown presumably since Roman times, but viticulture on the island was already present in Etruscan times and continued to be the main economic activity until the mid-20th century.
