Vermentino has a correlation with Pigato that has led to various theses. According to some studies, the two grapes are the same, but according to producers there is a distinction between the two, and genetic tests show that Pigato is a biotype of Vermentino. The origin is also unclear, the most plausible hypothesis being that Vermentino arrived and spread to Liguria from France via the French Riviera, and on the Colli di Luni, an area that has always been considered ideal for this grape variety. In the 1800s Vermentino spread especially in the typical "fasce" or "terraces" rising towards the sea.

The name of the Canaiolo Nero grape variety is thought to derive from the Latin "dies caniculares," the dog days of August, because the berries of this variety change color between late July and mid-August. Another hypothesis of the name concerns the dog rose, whose fragrance can be found in wines made from Canaiolo Nero. It is an ancient variety that is mentioned in documents from the 14th century and later described as excellent for blending with Sangiovese grapes making the wines softer and with the ability to age better. Canaiolo Nero, which has always been of great importance over the centuries, was almost abandoned, especially after phylloxera, because of grafting difficulties and poor adaptability to the American rootstock. Another problem with Canaiolo Nero is the near absence of resistance to viruses, making for slow plant growth with irregular yields.
