Cataratto is a grape variety widespread throughout Sicily, mainly in the areas of the city of Trapani and Palermo, and is the second most widespread white grape variety in Italy. The name Catarratto comes from cataratta, meaning waterfall, because of the large amount of wine that can be produced. There are several biotypes of Catarratto, and genetic studies have established a parental link with Garganega.
