The Gattinara appellation is located in the territory of 'Alto Piemonte, at the foot of Monte Rosa, in the far northeast of the region. The vineyards are located in a hilly basin behind the town, with a west-southwest exposure and an altitude that touches 500 meters on the rocky promontory that also serves as protection from mountain winds. The soils are of volcanic origin very rich in minerals and have been cultivated with vines since before Roman rule, probably by the Ligurians who resided in the area. Local wine was already being exported in the late 1300s, and in 1525 it was donated to European courts.
