Pignoletto is a grape variety native to Emilia and grows mainly in the hills around Bologna. It is mentioned by Pliny the Elder as "Pino Lieto," from which the current name is thought to derive; another hypothesis for the name concerns the shape of the cluster, which resembles a pine cone. According to some genetic studies, it appears that Pignoletto has the same DNA as Grechetto di Todi and therefore has a Greek origin, having arrived in Italy during colonizations.
